With the Welsh Assembly elections coming up on the 5th of May we felt that it was important to look at some of the key policy decisions that could help support the development of community energy in Wales. This is focusing on policies that could be implemented at a Welsh level to improve the prospects for community energy schemes in Wales.
We will be sharing this manifesto with all the main political parties in Wales in the run up to the assembly elections but we also hope that it will be a useful tool for you so that you can challenge prospective candidates over what they will be doing to support community energy if they are elected. We know there is general support for community energy in Wales but this has not translated into many physical projects on the ground. We hope that by implementing some of these policies we can help the public, voluntary and private sector take the steps necessary to make this ambition a reality.
We want to see:
- Targets for community energy in Wales
- A right of local supply
- Easing of the planning process for Community Renewables
- Measures to address grid constraints
- A community right to buy in Wales
- Co-ordinated and co-designed support for Community Energy in Wales
